I'm a designer and art director that specializes in refined visuals for emerging lifestyle brands. I work with creative entrepreneurs and companies to develop a cohesive story across all assets, including their brand identity, website design, and accompanying print collateral. I'm also the founder of a design, culture and lifestyle website called The Elysian Edit.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
My background is in interior design, and I segued into graphic design by virtue of living on the computer for so many years, drafting floor plans and navigating Creative Suite for client presentations. I've also been authoring a blog in some capacity since 2007, so having an audience there allowed me to transition into full-time freelance work in early 2012. Since launching my studio, I've crafted brand identities for creative businesses ranging from ceramicists, to hat designers, to organic beauty brands.
FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD, WHAT DO THEY USUALLY LACK?
Over the past decade, I've developed a very edited eye that I think lends itself well to designing for the creative market. I think organization also plays a large roll in the success of a business, and without it, projects can go a bit haywire. I've honed in on a number of systems that allow me to easily communicate with clients and successfully manage a myriad of projects.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I'm working with a few emerging businesses (some of them local to LA!) to develop their branding, website, and packaging systems. I've also teamed up with a few contributors to create new content for The Elysian Edit that I'm really excited to share.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
I tend to use the word "refined" to describe my work, as the overarching style is simplified, but far from minimal. I'm drawn to things that are approachable and tell a story. I think good design involves eliminating anything unnecessary so that the subtle details can speak, and I try to lend this approach to all of my design projects.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
Designing will always be my primary passion, but I also like the idea of spending more time on The Elysian Edit and providing readers with valuable content on living simply and mindfully.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
I often feel limited as a small operation and wish I had more hands on deck to assist in the every day tasks of running a business (and a website!). Sometimes it feels impossible to do it all, but I'm learning to seek out experts in the areas I can use a helping a hand, and to say no when I'm maxed out on energy.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HOUR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Manage my social media outlets. Keeping everything consistent and up to date can be really be a full-time job!
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
I wish I had told myself in my late teens that all of the bumps in the road will make you stronger, and that the life you want is really possible, you just have to wait for it.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
I would love more insight on marketing and business strategy. The topics endlessly fascinate me, but aren't necessarily my strong suit.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
I'm always on the lookout for new brand identity and website design projects that live within the lifestyle industry, whether it pertains to interiors, travel, food, fashion, wellness, etc.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?
I love working with existing or emerging creative businesses and entrepreneurs that are looking to take their brand from concept to creation. My ideal client is someone who has a penchant for refinement and simplicity when it comes to aesthetics, and is enthusiastic, collaborative and patient. The design process takes time to yield a result that is not only beautiful, but successfully sets you apart from your competitors.
WHAT IS YOUR RATE?
$150/hour, projects start at $3,000. Every project is estimated on a case-by-case basis, which is determined after an initial discussion in which we review your needs and scope.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
E-mail is always best! Feel free to reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org with the details of your project, your ideal timeline, and the scope of services you're looking for.
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Cooking, reading, traveling, and laughing.
