Juliana Mariia Rose
I'm a maker, photographer, content creator, and a budding designer. I'm a blog contributor to Cardamom & Coffee, have a small photography business, as well as CHOCO. & COCO, a raw chocolate truffle company. My background lies in producing, the film & music industries, and brand/marketing partnerships in the tech & media space
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I studied acting, communication, and film as an undergraduate; I dove into the film and music industries and working with artists in business by way of production companies, a talent agency (CAA), and online media (Yahoo!). My work was in identifying and executing brand partnerships & brand creation. I then took the leap to fly solo, focusing on photography and brand creation for boutique brands & smaller companies. I also started a raw chocolate truffle company along the way :]
FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD, WHAT DO THEY USUALLY LACK?
Oh goodness. I don't typically like to focus on what others lack; but I will say that I am absolutely not afraid to take risks, I am super curious, a continuous, lifelong learner, and as you can probably tell, I believe I can learn & do it all! (at least when it comes to anything creative, artistic, or organizational/executional). Perhaps this is what one calls a wearer-of-many-hats?
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I'm working on growing my photography portfolio, particularly focusing on portrait photography, getting my foot in the door in spatial (physical, not digital UX) experience design, and transitioning my truffle business into events involved with social impact & social good.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
In short, I like the combination of both stylized and designed and also 'of the earth,' or natural. that sounds really high-level and esoteric but in essence, that duality, that's what I'm aiming for and what I'd like to get to. I think the outdoor/adventure brand space (brands like oliberte, el camino travel, juniper ridge, huckberry, foster huntington, etc..) do pretty well in that regard; I also love the styles of some of the personalities in the food & slow living movement (a la local_milk); and i can't help but be totally fascinated with the whole stark black and white design trend, things like snarkitecture, etc, ... [oh and I love the throwback retro style of shelter social club; I think I'm inherently retro by nature].
I am definitely still exploring and developing my personal style; and i'd love to see how good design can play a part in the social good and education space. I know very nice and ideo are doing some of that. it'd be so great to see these kinds of social initiatives be a part of our culture's lexicon and trends.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
I'd love to be more involved with designing brand experiences for both product design and spatial design.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
In broad terms, I think maybe not having a clearly defined trajectory; so like, knowing specifically that doing x and y, when & where, will get me to outcome z. It's all kind of an experiment and seeing what works, I know, but sometimes it'd be nice to have some sort of clearly defined path that future predicts what certain steps & combinations will generate.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HOUR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Finances, anything to do with strictly business-related affairs.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
Probably to trust myself and my work, especially my creative work; it's easy to get ever so slightly intimidated surrounded by all the extremely talented creatives, particularly in LA (where I was living for many years until very recently!)
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
Oh it would absolutely be about experience design (again physical, not UX) which I am very much interested in -- how do you curate a space to affect behavior and emotions, and ultimately have an impact on the audience.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Photography, design, space curation & event hosting, and brand development.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?
I'd describe an ideal work/collaboration as being open, or transparent; having expectations from both parties clearly defined; friendly, but definitely honest; and ideally sharing some similar values or lifestyle (nice, but not necessary).
WHAT IS YOUR RATE?
Determined on a per project basis, let's chat!
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Writing, epic-doodling, singing sometimes rather terribly.
